Father David’s Message

This week we have heard the news of the birth of a son, George Alexander Louis (a future King of England) to the Duchess of Cambridge and Prince William.  The child will have many advantages that most of us will never know or experience, but in a way he has been born with less freedom than we have.  There will be so much intrusion into his private life, so much criticism of everything he says and does – most of us would not want that lack of freedom and public exposure.  As his young parents, William and Kate come to terms with their new status as a family, let us remember them in our prayers this Sunday and pray that despite the pressures of public life they may have a happy and united life together.

This weekend the Bishop’s of England and Wales have asked us to keep a day to think about and celebrate family life and life in general – our responsibility for safeguarding the life’s of others as well as our own life.  Further information to help you can be found on www.dayforlife.org

Lots of people have been surprised how much of local interest there is in AshMuseum which is directly opposite Holy Angels Church.  Unfortunately, probably due to the expense of staff, the Museum is only open at certain times when it can be staffed by volunteers.  The next date it will be open is on Heritage Day, Sunday 15th September during the afternoon from 2pm until 4.30pm.  Entry is free.

Several people have asked about the possibility of using the Church Halls at Holy Angels and Holy Family for the Great British Coffee Mornings organised in aid of the McMillan Cancer Nurses on Friday, 27th September. (www.coffee.macmillan.org.uk)  I think that this is a great charity which gives so much help and hope to people at a difficult time in their lives.  If anyone would like to take on the responsibility of co-ordinating a Coffee Morning at Holy Angels or Holy Family in September, please see Father David as soon as possible.

Thanks to those who either provided Bric-a-Brac or bought Bric-a-Brac for last weeks sale at Holy Angels.  Your help is greatly appreciated.

Deacon John will be away on an extended holiday until the first Sunday of September.  We wish John and Ann a good holiday and look forward to their return in September.

St. Martha, Virgin

On Monday, 29th July we celebrate the feast of St. Martha who was the sister of Mary and Lazarus with whom she lived at Bethany, a village two miles distant from Jerusalem. The family, it appears, was of some importance in the country and, as is known from the Gospels, intensely devoted to Our Blessed Lord, who was frequently their guest.

Martha is the prototype of the busy housewife because of the incident narrated in the Gospel when she asked Christ to rebuke her sister who was sitting at his feet leaving all the work to her.  Instead, she heard the sublime answer that Mary had chosen the better part. Again, it was Martha who at the death of her brother had the Faith to declare that God would accomplish anything that Jesus willed, and she heard the words.  “I am the Resurrection and the Life,” to which she replied with a magnificent act of Faith:  “I believe You are the Messiah, the Son of God.”  Finally, Martha was serving at table when Mary anointed Christ’s feet with precious nard.
