PRAYER FOR PEACE
 for Syria, Egypt and the World
(To be said by all at Mass before the sign of Peace)

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is discord, union;
Where this is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
Where there is sadness, joy,
for your mercy and truth’s sake.
O Lord Jesus Christ, as we think of Egypt and Syria at this time, may Peace replace anger and bitterness in Our World today and may all seek to become instruments of your Peace now and forever. Amen

Holy Family Church Catholic Parish Farnham, Hale, Weybourne & Badshot Lea

Presentation of Guild of St. Stephen Gold Medal
to
Peter Davies MC

The Guild of St. Stephen was established in 1905 by Cardinal Bourne.  Its aims are promoting and supporting the highest standards of Altar serving throughout the Catholic Church in the UK.

It is not just important to know what needs to be done in serving on the Altar to make the celebration of the Mass and other ceremonies a dignified and uplifting experience but also the meaning behind the sacred ceremonies.

The Guild was given St. Stephen as its patron because St. Stephen as a Deacon was one of the earliest  to serve at the Altar and he eventually was killed by pagans for his devotion to Christ and the holy liturgy of the Church.

Peter Davies has been an active member of the Guild of St. Stephen since 1942 and a Master of Ceremonies in the Guild since 1951.  Today, we acknowledge those years of faithful and loyal service and in particular the special benefit his service as an MC has been to the Church of the Holy Family, Farnham with the 60 years MC achievement award.  We also thank Catherine, Peter’s wife, and constant supporter in his work for the Church.  Congratulations Peter from all at the HolyFamilyChurch.

Church Garden Meeting: Wed, 25th Sept. 8pm.
A reminder to the Volunteers that they will soon need to make a major decision about the future layout of the Garden.  Meanwhile the Ida Burton Trust has sponsored a professional Gardener for one day.

Message from Fr. David

The more observant of you may have noticed that recently, following encouragement from the Diocese, we have been getting a little more safety conscious.  The back outside steps at Holy Family have been white lined, the water heater in the kitchen at Holy Angels now has a safety screen.  Soon there will be a notice on the information boards at both Churches telling us where the Emergency cut off is for the Gas, Electric and Water.  The double slatted doors on the toilets at Holy Family (one of which was broken) will be replaced with a single new door which will be much safer for children (and thank goodness we do have a lot of children at Mass, the Children’s Liturgy and the weekday Mother and Toddler Group.  These will not be the only safety changes that we may need to make.  All churches are now required to complete a safety assessment each year and also keep an accident book.  Thankfully we have had no serious accidents at either of our churches, but we have to comply with the regulations in the same way as everyone else.  If anyone at either of our churches has experience of writing health and safety reports and would like to be the nominated person for Health and Safety for either of our churches, please see Father David or Deacon John otherwise one of us will have to ‘wear that hat’.

Mums and Dads with young children – during the summer school holidays there is no Children’s Liturgy, but please feel free to take some time out during the Mass if you need to.  CCTV facilities are available in the hall at Holy Angels and the Children’s Chapel at Holy Family.

During the week we welcome the Sister of Mercy, from Midhurst, who will be staying in the Priest’s House.  (Not all the sisters from Midhurst – there are 22 of them in the Convent of Midhurst!)

Please remember in your prayers the people of Syria and Egypt at this dangerous time.  There will be prayers in the Church at all Masses this weekend for Peace in the World and we are sure there will also be prayers for Peace in your homes and in your hearts.

Father Paul – was informed only recently that his time of departure for Guernsey has now been delayed by a few days and therefore Father Paul has kindly agreed to say Mass today for us at both Churches.  Today will, however, be his very last Mass before he departs for his new three year appointment on the island of Guernsey. Once again please keep Father Paul in your prayers.

The Sacred Heart of Jesus – In our two Churches of Holy Angels and Holy Family we have some beautiful statues of ‘The Sacred Heart of Jesus’.

When we want to know someone better it can be helpful if we can picture them in our mind.  If we can’t see or meet them, we look for anything that may help us understand what they look like and what they are interested in.

The Gospel gives us a clear picture of the loving and caring nature of Jesus but we have no picture or photograph of Jesus.  We do, however, have a description of Jesus by Publius Lentulus, a Roman Governor of Judea, who lived at the time of Jesus.

“There appeared in these days a man of great virtue, named Jesus the Christ, who is yet amongst us.  A man of stature somewhat all and comely:

His hair the colour of chestnut full ripe, plain to the years, when, downward, it is more oriental, curling and waving about his shoulders.  In the midst of his forehead is a partition of his hair;

His forehead is plain and very delicate;
His face without spot or wrinkle, a lovely red and beautiful:
His beard thick in colour like his hair, not over-long:
His look innocent and mature;
His eyes gray quick and clear.”

The Sacred Heart of Jesus

The Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus helps us focus on the humanity of Christ and the emotions and feelings that Jesus would have experienced with all that went with his experience of a human heart for 33 years.  He would know personally the joys and disappointments of life, the pain of rejection and false accusations, the love of his mother Mary and foster Father, Joseph, the friendship of the Apostles.

O Sacred Heart of Jesus I implore the grace to love you daily more and more.

Calling all young people from YR7 upwards – Our next youth meeting will take place on Saturday 7th September from 3-5pm at St Mary’s Room at Holy Angels church.  Look forward to seeing our regulars and some new faces too.  Gloria Benson
