Two people after Mass last Sunday asked me to ask the adults to give a good example to the children by showing extra respect when on the Sanctuary or in front of the Blessed Sacrament and to keep in mind that there are times when others would like to stay and pray for a few minutes. I am sure we all believe in the presence of Christ in the Blessed Sacrament but sometimes it may look as if we don’t. Thank you for kindly thinking of others by giving this very sensitive point your understanding.
World War One Commemoration
More than 16 million people died and 20 million were seriously injured during the First World War so it doesn’t take a genius to work out that there are ‘no winners – everyone involved has paid a price and that price has had a life changing effect leaving sadness and loss. Any triumphalism in time of War can only be temporary cover up to hide and distract people from the price paid in human casualties.
Here in England we are fortunate that we are at Peace and that there is a hand of friendship between the UK and Germany. After the 2nd World War, in an attempt to build up good relationships between the Countries of Europe many towns and cities between the two countries twinned. Ash as part of the Borough of Guildford is twinned with Freiburg and Farnham is twinned with Andernach.
As we commemorate the First World War, Holy Angels, Ash will be including in their Remembrance of the dead those of the Cathedral Parish of Our Lady, Freiburg. Bishop Stephen Burger and the parish priest at Andernach, Father Lutz Schultz and the people of those parishes today are also in our prayers especially as we say the Our Father together in English and German. May we never take for granted the peace those of both sides who died in the sad days of war longed to see and may we never underestimate the importance of being Ambassadors for Peace in the World today.
Our Father, who art in heaven
Vater unser in Himmel,
Hallowed be they name;
Geheiligt werde dein Name.
Thy kingdom come;
Dein Reich komme.
Thy will be done on earth
Dein Wille geschehe,
As it is in heaven.
Wie im Himmel so auf Erden.
Give us this day our daily bread;
Unser tagliches Brot gib uns heute
And forgive us our trespasses
Und vergib uns unsere Schuld,
As we forgive those who trespass against us;
Wie auch wir vergeben unser Schuldigern.
And lead us not into temptation
Und fuhre uns nicht in Versuchung,
But deliver us from evil.
Sondern erlose uns von dem Bosen.
There is a small display of First World War pictures at the back of Holy Family Church and a larger display with some artefacts in the porch at Holy Angels. Please take a few moments to view the displays and take a peace light home and light it tonight on this Sunday, the vigil of the First World War.
Mary Murphy’s father, John O’Sullivan joined the Royal Irish Riffles in 1914 and like many Irish men who left Ireland as British Subjects fighting for the Crown they returned home to a changed Ireland moving quickly towards Independence. This began in 1914 and, passing through several difficult stages of partial Independence, became a reality in 1937.
We also remember Robert John Ward ( Queen’s Royal Regiment) Molly Llanwarne’s father and Cecil Thomas Whitworth (Royal Army) a relative of Ann Whitworth at Holy Family.
Our two churches Holy Angels and Holy Family together with others will join together for a united act of Remembrance on Monday, 4th August at 7.30pm in Holy Angels Church.
A Poem
Why are people wearing poppies, mummy,
Wearing poppies in the town today?
The poppies dear child are flowers of love
For the men who marched away.
But why did they choose a poppy, mummy,
Why not a beautiful white rose?
Because my dear child, men fought and died
In the fields where poppies grow.
But why are the poppies so red, mummy,
Why are the poppies so red?
Red is the colour of Blood, my child,
The blood the soldiers shed.
The middle of the poppy is black, mummy,
Why does it have to be black?
Black, dear child, is the symbol of grief
For the men who never came back.
But why are you crying now mummy,
Are you sad or are you in pain?
My tears are my fears for you my dear child
That we may forget and go to war again.
