First Holy Communion Day – Thank you……

As our First Holy Communion programme comes to an end this year, we would like to say a few thanks to those who helped us on the First Holy Communion day, with apologies for anyone we may have missed out. Your help has been greatly appreciated.

Thank you to Father David and Deacon John for carrying out the FHC Masses at both churches. As part of helping the FHC days to run so smoothly we would like to thank our Welcomers (Ann Martindale and Chris Mann), the Altar Servers (Gloria Benson, Thomas Howarth-Edwards,   Regan Woods, Lara Rawnsley and Claire Hobbs); the Eucharistic Ministers ( Kathryn Besley, Alan Graham and George Walsh); the Organist (Anne McHale) and Christina Allgood for her singing during both of the services. We would like to thank the team of flower ladies at both churches for providing such wonderful flower arrangements. A big thank you to Maggie Bachelor for assisting us throughout the FHC programme and also on the day.

Thank you to Maria Kellock for making communion cakes for both churches and thank you to all of the parents from last year’s First Holy Communion group for providing the Communion Breakfast and pouring out teas and coffees etc.

Thank you to Rita for being our efficient point of liaison in the office. Finally thank you to Lorraine Brown for providing us with a sound foundation on which to base our course this year and for her help and advice as we started out on the programme this year as a new team of Catechists.

Children’s Chapel

In the Children’s Chapel,  the picture of Jesus blessing children is a copy of a painting by a Benedictine Sister of the Priory of Our Lady of Peace at Turvey, Bedforshire.

The Altar Cross was painted by a member of a Fair Trade Community in San Salvador.

The Bronze Eucharistic Cross on the front of the Children’s Altar was made by a member of the Maria Lac Community in Germany.

CAFOD ‘s Syria Appeal

CAFOD have asked us to thank the people of our two parishes for responding so generously to CAFOD’s Syria appeal.   They received a total of £1,483,139 from across the Catholic community of England and Wales.

An escalating crisis – As we all know from recent media coverage the humanitarian situation in Syria is catastrophic and continues to deteriorate. Fighting between government forces and armed opposition groups is escalating, with both sides increasingly making use of heavy weaponry in populated areas. The UN estimates that 6.8 million people in Syria are in urgent need of aid, and that more than five million people have been forced from their homes – a figure that has doubled since the beginning of the year. The war has caused widespread food shortages, disrupted water supplies, healthcare and other basic services, and is preventing people from making a living.  Because of the fighting, it is difficult to deliver humanitarian aid in many parts of Syria.

Meanwhile, a further 1.6 million people have fled into neighbouring countries and the numbers are increasing rapidly.  An average of 8,000 Syrians are leaving the country every day. The people of Lebanon, Turkey and Jordan have shown great compassion in welcoming Syrians but the sheer number is putting an enormous strain on already overstretched resources. Refugees arriving in neighbouring countries often require food, blankets, household items and counselling to help them cope with the traumatic experiences they have endured.

How donations to CAFOD’s Syria appeal are now making a difference

Because of security issues on the ground we cannot communicate details of the specific programmes that CAFOD is supporting.  But we can say that we are working with trusted Church partners in Syria who are providing food parcels, medical aid and relief supplies, and helping people to find safe places to stay. We are also working in Lebanon, Turkey and Jordan to ensure that newly arrived refugees have food, medical support, clothes and safe places in which to take shelter.

CAFOD is one of only a handful of UK aid agencies able to work in Syria and one of an even smaller number working with people on both sides of the conflict.  This is because we are part of the Catholic Church with its extensive networks which makes it possible to provide aid in some of the worst hit and most inaccessible areas of the country.

Your prayers are needed

Please continue to pray for the people of Syria and for our local partners who are working to alleviate their suffering.

Thank you for all the support that you and the members of your communities give to CAFOD’s work.  Please contact me if you would like to offer CAFOD any feedback.
