Day for Life
Day for Life the day in the Church’s year dedicated to celebrating the dignity of life – will this year call upon young people in particular to protect and cherish life from conception to natural death.
Each year we keep this Sunday as a ‘Day for Life’ when we are called to reflect on the gift of life. The gift of life is freely bestowed on us and yet it is a gift that must be accepted and which we must work to protect.
In our culture there seems to be a growing carelessness about the sanctity of life. Those who are the most vulnerable and those who need the most care seem to be the ones who are most easily discarded, whose human dignity is quickly forgotten.
The Bishops’ message for this day reminds us:
‘Every one of us, young and old alike can play our part in the promotion of life. Our every thought, word or action can promote or extinguish life, we all have a valuable contribution to make’.
World War One Commemoration
Why keep an anniversary which reminds us of a sad and terrible time in the history of the world?
Those who are concerned about the current troubles in Israel and Palestine, Russia and the Ukraine, Syria and other parts of the world would probably say that there are many who have not learnt the lesson of peaceful negotiation and the cost of ignoring it. It is essential that all peoples and every nation have the opportunity to learn how justice and peace can create an environment where the highest qualities of human life can be achieved. Learning from the past must give us the opportunity to improve the future.
Sunday, 3rd August is the Vigil of the 100th Anniversary of the start of World War One, a historical event which brought so much suffering and sadness to millions of people throughout Europe. We now know that over 16 million people died and 20 million were wounded, there are no statistics of how many more experienced long lasting sadness and misery as their lives and communities were changed forever.
At the 9.25am Mass at Holy Family and 11am Mass at Holy Angels on 3rd August there will be a minutes silence during which a Book of Remembrance with the names of local people who died will be brought to the Altar. All parishioners will be given a prayer leaflet with the names of those who died.
On Monday, 4th August our two Churches will join together for one act of commemoration with a Special Mass at Holy Angels at 7.30pm. During the Mass the Books of Remembrance for the different areas in our parish will be brought to the Altar in an Act of Remembrance. The Our Father will be said in both English and German. There will be an opportunity for a gathering after the Mass for refreshments and you are invited to bring a plate of finger food to share reflecting the spirit of community and friendship during the First World War.
There will also be an exhibition which will include a 1st World War Army Chaplain’s Chalice, a 1st World War Army Chaplain’s Prayer Book, a Rosary from a French nun killed comforting injured and dying soldiers on the battlefield and copies of photographs from the War and copies of British Newspapers published during the War.
The 100th Anniversary Commemoration on Monday 4th is not only for ourselves but is open to anyone who may wish to join us so if you know of anyone who would like to commemorate the Anniversary but have no event to go to, please be a good neighbour to them and invite them to join you.
For the Reception after the Commemoration Mass on 4th August anyone who can bring food based on a World War 1 or 2 Recipe is invited to add a card to their plate to mention this. Some suggestions are available on line: egg. Potato Pie, Duff Pudding, Corned Beef sandwiches, Cornish Pasties etc.
The hand of friendship – If you know of anyone whose homeland is Germany please ensure that they get an invitation to the Commemoration on 4thAugust. It will not be a triumphal event but an occasion when all are reminded of the importance of people living in Peace in the world. One Planet – One Family – One Father in Heaven.
