Women’s World Day of Prayer – 1st March at Hale Methodist Church (The Green) at 2.00 p.m.  The service has been prepared by Christian women of France – all are welcome.

Women’s World Day of Prayer – 1^st March, 2013 at 7.00pm at St. Paul’s Church, Tongham – The service this year focuses on France and is entitled ‘I was a stranger and you welcomed me’.

Message from Father David

This Sunday the Chinese people celebrate Chinese New Year.  Christianity has been known in China since at least the 7^th Century but it is in the last 200 years that it has become a significant part of life in China.  Today the Chinese government acknowledges that there are 14 million Christians in China, however these statistics are influenced by Government propaganda and the Catholic and protestant Churches themselves know of at least 84 million Christians belonging to various Christian denominations and it is acknowledged that there are also many “closet Christians” who because of their work in a Government related area of life have to conceal their Christianity.

Our Chinese parishioners would like to wish us all a “Happy Chinese New Year” and every happiness and blessing for our families.

The group of Christians in China belonging to the Catholic Church are divided – some parts of which are for political reasons forced to be semi independent of the Pope and others who are in full Communion with the Pope.  The Protestant Churches are also growing in significance.

St. Valentines Day – commonly known as Valentine’s Day, or the Feast of Saint Valentine, is observed on February 14 each year. It is celebrated in many countries around the world, although it remains a working day in most of them. After New Year’s Day, it is the most celebrated holiday around the world.

St. Valentine’s Day began as a liturgical celebration of one or more early Christian saints named Valentinus. The most popular martyrology associated with Saint Valentine was that he was imprisoned for performing weddings for soldiers who were forbidden to marry and for ministering to Christians, who were persecuted under the Roman Empire; during his imprisonment, he is said to have healed the daughter of his jailer Asterius. Legend states that before his execution he wrote “from your Valentine” as a farewell to her.

Easter and Holy Week – Due to the building work at Holy Family the usual arrangements for the Services for Holy Week and Easter have been slightly changed so that those services which are in the dark evenings have been transferred to Ash for this year.  We do not know how deep the hole will be for the new drains; there will be protective fencing – but we did not want to take any chances.  We have also put on an Easter Sunday 5.30pm Mass to compensate for the loss of the 5.30pm Saturday Vigil Mass at Easter which may affect parents with young children.  The services will be as follows:-

A Reflection

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate, but that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, ‘Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous?’  Actually, who are you not to be?  You are a child of God.  Your playing small doesn’t serve the world.  There’s nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are born to make manifest the Glory of God that is within us.
It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone.  And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.
