Songs of Praise by Churches Together in Farnham
Sunday 26th January at 4pm at HolyFamilyChurch, Heath End, Farnham. All are welcome
Father David’s Message
This weekend we begin the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. People have different ideas of what they understand by Christian Unity. For some, it means uniformity – everyone using the same translation of prayers and form of worship. Others see Christian Unity as a common understanding of friendship between different religious groups or denominations who recognise Christ but differ in what they believe he taught. In truth the only hope for real unity is in praying for a deeper understanding of the unity that Christ himself hoped for – perhaps he would not be so worried about “outward unity” but happy with Christians of all traditions believing and teaching the same basic truths and showing their love for him in whatever way they find most helpful and meaningful. Any mother or father with several children will know that they each express themselves in different ways but hopefully all their children express themselves with love from the heart. Somehow I think that God understands this too and is happier with a positive response to his love rather than no response to his love – even if it may take different forms and be expressed in different ways.
May I remind you of the two events that we have been asked to participate in during this Week of Prayer for Christian Unity:-
- Sunday, 19th January at 3pm. A Taize Service at St. Mark’s Church, Normandy followed by refreshments in the Hall.
- Sunday, 26th January at 4pm. A Songs of Praise organised by Churches Together in Farnham at HolyFamilyChurch, Farnham. Refreshments in the hall after the service.
I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at one or both of these services. As there will be people from many different local Churches, please make sure you let people know that you are representing Holy Angels or HolyFamilyChurch so they can see we support the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity.
This week we have also received an invitation from Rev. Neil Lambert to share in a joint act of worship followed by a Social Gathering this year. The other Churches realise that we cannot be in two or three places at the same time, so the shared event with St. Mary’s will take place later in the Year. Any suggestions for the event?
God Bless you all, Father David
VERY IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR PARENTS
SCHOOL LEVY
If you have a child at St. Polycarps School and would like the parish to sponsor your child for the School/Parish levy, please sign the form which is available today and for the next two Sundays at the back of Church. This will help us to know that you have not moved and are still living in the parish and attending Holy Family or Holy Angels Church. We can then make a contribution for your child to the School maintenance Fund.
Thank you
A Reflection
Forgiving does not mean forgetting. When we forgive a person, the memory of the wound might stay with us for a long time, even throughout our lives. Sometimes we carry the memory in our bodies as a visible sign. But forgiveness changes the way we remember. It converts the curse into a blessing. When we forgive our parents for their divorce, our children for their lack of attention, our friends for unfaithfulness in crisis, our doctors for their ill advice, we no longer have to experience ourselves as the victims of events we had no control over.
Forgiveness allows us to claim our own power and not let these events destroy us; it enables them to become events that deepen the wisdom of our hearts. Forgiveness indeed heals memories.
This Reflection is taken from a Book of Daily Thoughts called Bread for the Journey ISBN 0-232-52202-0 published by Darton, Longman and Todd price £9.95. This useful thought provoker goes well with a cup of coffee each morning!
